In 1895, a gentleman of a rather dubious nature, known as Gordon Chetwynd, sold what was known then as Rutland Cottage to the 5th Earl of Cadogan. Rumour has it that the king himself became a frequent visitor to the hotel and entertained the beautiful Lilly Langtry here. Secret passages are said to exist between Cadogan Hotel and the king's quarters at Palace House.
